Synopsis

Trapped on an island, Calypso's life is turned upside down when Odysseus washes ashore, and she experiences companionship for the first time. "Calypso", a play with song, takes a minor character from a classic story and gives her a full-fledged narrative, spinning it into a tale about first love and the myths we choose to remember.

 CALYPSO
18–35, she/her, woman, any ethnicity
An immortal nymph trapped on an island by the gods for more years than she can count. Deeply longing, powerful, and wryly self-aware. She offers shelter—and maybe more—to a shipwrecked hero. Must be proficient in vocals and guitar.

Character Descriptions

ODYSSEUS
18–35, he/him, cis-man, any ethnicity
A classic Greek hero stuck in a midlife crisis. Weathered by years of war and wandering, he washes up on Calypso’s shore and must choose between staying in the comfort of new love or returning to a life and home he barely recognizes. Thoughtful, flawed, and searching.

HERMES
18–35, she/they, woman, non-binary, or transfemme, any ethnicity
The divine trickster. Messenger of the gods, god of transitions, thresholds, and chaos. Playful, sharp, and unexpectedly wise. A mover between worlds, always with one foot out the door.

Instructions

All actors must submit a 1–2 minute monologue. Classical monologues are preferred, but not required!

Actors auditioning for Calypso must also submit 32 bars of a song performed with guitar. Folk-style songs preferred, but not required!
